Juli 2026<\/strong> – After more than eleven years of conflict, the situation in Yemen is once again threatening to escalate significantly. The Houthi militia, which controls the north of the country and is supported by Iran, has attacked Saudi oil tankers in the Red Sea and announced further attacks. A military response by Saudi Arabia or its allies could reignite the conflict, which has been largely frozen for years.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div>

<\/i><\/i><\/span>The humanitarian crisis is getting worse<\/span><\/a><\/h4><\/div>

For the population, this would further exacerbate an already severe humanitarian crisis. Displacement, economic collapse, and underfunded humanitarian aid are causing hunger to reach dangerous levels once again. At the same time, many areas lack access to clean water and medical care. The work of aid organizations is also becoming increasingly difficult: Houthi authorities have detained numerous humanitarian workers.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div>

Even before the recent developments, many families in Yemen were already suffering from hunger and extreme hardship. The story of Ali and his family shows how little leeway they have and how severely a further deterioration of the situation would affect them.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div>

<\/i><\/i><\/span>Life under difficult circumstances<\/span><\/a><\/h4><\/div>

Ali lives with his wife and their six children in a refugee camp in Taiz. Their home is a simple hut, which Ali built himself from old bricks and scraps of wood which he found. There are no doors or windows. The roof provides little protection from the scorching sun and isn`t watertight when it rains. Despite this, it`s the only place the family can call home.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div>

<\/i><\/i><\/span>Without basic income<\/span><\/a><\/h4><\/div>

Previously, Ali earned his living as a casual labourer. However, the ongoing conflict and the difficult economic situation in Yemen mean that such possibilities have all but disappeared. <\/p>\n

Now he cares for his very ill wife and their children. His wife suffers from osteoporosis and is severely limited in her daily life. The family can’t afford medicine. Like many other families in the camp, they share basic sanitary facilities with several other neighbouring households.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div>

<\/i><\/i><\/span>Hunger dictates daily life<\/span><\/a><\/h4><\/div>

Above all, however, hunger dictates the family\u2019s daily life. Every day, their thoughts revolve around the same question: How can they get enough food to feed the family? The family regularly relies on humanitarian aid. <\/p>\n

\u201eSometimes my children go to sleep hungry\u201c, says Ali.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div>

<\/i><\/i><\/span>Food help with an effect<\/span><\/a><\/h4><\/div>

One day before the distribution of humanitarian aid, Ali receives a call from our local partner team. His family will receive a food package – with 50 Kilogrammes of flour, sugar, legumes and cooking oil. <\/p>\n

\u201eThis help comes at exactly the right time\u201c, exclaims Ali, when he hears the news.<\/p>\n

For the family, the package means a lot more than the delivery of food. It secures their food supply for several weeks and for a while takes away their greatest everyday concern: to have enough to eat. <\/p>\n

As the food arrives the children gather round and look at the individual products. For the family, the delivery is a sign that they are not forgotten in their difficult situation.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div>

<\/i><\/i><\/span>More than 7,300 people reached<\/span><\/a><\/h4><\/div>

Together with our local partner organization Human Needs Development (HND) we have implemented a project to improve the nutritional status of especially needy families in Yemen. With support from Aktion Deutschland Hilft a total of 1,205 families were provided with food packages between mid-August 2025 and February 2026. <\/p>\n

More than 7,300 people in the regions of Hodeidah, Sanaa und Taiz received this acutely required support.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div>

<\/i><\/i><\/span>Funding from the WDR Weihnachtswunder 2024<\/span><\/a><\/h4><\/div>

The project was only possible with proceeds from the action \u201eWDR 2 Weihnachtswunder 2024<\/a>“
in favour of the allied organizations of Aktion Deutschland Hilft<\/a>. Thanks to this funding, families like those of Ali were able to be supported in an especially difficult situation and their basic needs could be met for a number of weeks.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div>

<\/i><\/i><\/span>The situation remains critical <\/span><\/a><\/h4><\/div>

Current developments show how fragile the situation in Yemen remains. A renewed escalation would result in increased requirement for food, clean water and medical supplies \u2013 in a land in which many families already don’t know where the next meal is coming from.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div>
