September 2026 – Nearly three months after the severe earthquakes in Venezuela, the need remains great. Damaged pipelines and failures in basic infrastructure are making access to clean water difficult in many places. As part of our earthquake relief efforts in Venezuela, we are currently supporting an emergency aid project in La Guaira and Miranda aimed at securing the water supply for people displaced by the earthquakes. The project, scheduled to last three months, is being carried out in collaboration with the organization Aktion gegen den Hunger<\/strong><\/a> and supported by the collective Aktion Deutschland Hilft<\/a>. <\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div>

<\/i><\/i><\/span>No home any more<\/span><\/a><\/h4><\/div>

According to the latest reports, more than 6,500 people were killed in the severe earthquakes on June 24, and approximately 17,000 were injured. Numerous buildings collapsed or were severely damaged. Many families were forced to leave their homes and cannot remain there safely for the time being. <\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div>

<\/i><\/i><\/span>Increasing risk of infectious diseases<\/span><\/a><\/h4><\/div>

In the affected areas, access to clean water is limited. At the same time, there is a shortage of suitable tanks and containers for the safe storage of water, as well as a lack of sufficient toilets, showers, and handwashing facilities. Under these conditions, the risk of infectious diseases increases. <\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div>

<\/i><\/i><\/span>There where the need is greatest<\/span><\/a><\/h4><\/div>

\u201cClean water is needed every day\u2014for drinking, personal hygiene, and food preparation. With this new project, we\u2019re ensuring a steady supply where the need is greatest,\u201d says Anja Kotzlowski, Programme Manager at Action Against Hunger.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div>

<\/i><\/i><\/span>Displaced by the earthquakes<\/span><\/a><\/h4><\/div>

The project is primarily aimed at people or households displaced by earthquakes who, due to damaged or unsafe living conditions, are temporarily unable to remain safely in their homes. Particular attention is given to households with older adults, infants and toddlers, children and adolescents, as well as people with disabilities. <\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div>

<\/i><\/i><\/span>Reaching 1,800 people<\/span><\/a><\/h4><\/div>

Currently, the Bicentenario area in the Vargas administrative district of La Guaira state is designated as the site of operations. Water will be supplied through community distribution points. Depending on need, other earthquake-affected areas in La Guaira and Miranda where the water infrastructure has been damaged and access to water is currently insufficient may also be included. <\/p>\n

In total, the project is expected to reach about 1,800 people. The water is delivered by tanker trucks and disinfected through chlorination. Its quality and available quantity are regularly monitored. In addition, residents receive information on the safe storage and use of the water, as well as on basic hygiene measures. <\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div>

<\/i><\/i><\/span>Combined strengths<\/span><\/a><\/h4><\/div>

Aktion gegen den Hunger<\/a> has been active since the first 48 hours after the earthquakes and has already reached over 10,000 people. The organization is contributing its logistics, specialized staff, and existing coordination structures to the joint project. <\/p>\n

LandsAid is financing additional water deliveries, disinfection of water and associated hygiene measures.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div>

<\/i><\/i><\/span>The supply of safe drinking water<\/span><\/a><\/h4><\/div>

Water deliveries ensure a steady supply as long as the pipeline networks and other water systems are not yet functioning reliably. The overarching goal of this measure remains to provide safe water to the population affected by the earthquake. <\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div>

<\/i><\/i><\/span>Raising awareness of the situation <\/span><\/a><\/h4><\/div>

The project complements LandsAid\u2019s existing relief efforts, including the distribution of mother-and-child aid packages and food packages to residents and staff at a nursing home that was severely affected by the earthquake. \u201cEven three months after the earthquakes, the need for support remains great. That is why it is important to continue raising awareness about the situation of the affected families and to reliably continue providing aid,\u201d says Michaela Wiese, executive director of LandsAid. <\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div>
