Precarious Conditions

September 2026 — Syrian refugees are living in precarious conditions in informal camps around İzmir. Some families have been there for years. The settlements lack running water and a regular waste disposal system. For many people, access to medical care, education, and regular work is difficult. Their future remains uncertain.

The food supply is a particularly urgent issue. Many families can barely make ends meet. Those who work as day labourers in agriculture have low and irregular incomes.

Together with our long-standing Turkish partner, Imece, we are therefore supporting 1,000 Syrian refugee families in the camps around İzmir. This means the project will reach approximately 5,000 to 6,000 people. In the selection process, special consideration is given to families with many children, as well as families with elderly members and widows. The project is funded by Aktion Deutschland Hilft.

Families receive food packages containing non-perishable staple foods such as bulgur, lentils, pasta, flour, sugar, tomato paste, and sunflower oil. The contents were determined in consultation with the affected families and are based on their actual needs.

The food is purchased at Syrian-owned stores in İzmir that are run by refugees. The Imece team then puts together the packages and delivers them directly to two camps where the need is particularly great.

This provides families with essential staple foods for several weeks. At the same time, the assistance reaches people who are struggling to make ends meet under difficult conditions and who rely on a low and irregular income.

According to the latest UNHCR data, more than 2.2 million Syrian refugees are living in Turkey under temporary protection. The vast majority live outside formal refugee camps. Syrian families also live in informal settlements around İzmir.

Many of the refugees living there do not have secure residency status and are currently only tolerated. Their future is uncertain. Many cannot find regular work or work as day labourers for very low wages. Furthermore, many refugees in the camps are not registered in İzmir. As a result, they do not have regular access to public services such as hospitals and schools and cannot obtain work permits. This severely limits their access to medical care, income, and education. The basic needs of these families are not being met.

For more than ten years, our Turkish partner, Imece, has been carrying out aid projects for Syrian refugees in Turkey. For years, the refugees themselves have cited the insufficient supply of food as one of the most serious problems.

For this project, we worked with the participants to determine which foods they need most and which products are both long-lasting and easy to store. Since some family members work as day labourers in agriculture and therefore occasionally receive fresh food, the focus is on staple foods that store well.

Imece

Imece was founded in 2016 and has been active in the project region since day one. Since then, the organization has regularly conducted food distributions, distributed hygiene kits, and carried out training and educational activities for women and children.
