Venezuela: Food for a nursing home near Caracas

LandsAid and LasComaesAndantes ensure the supply of a nursing home in the earthquake-hit region

Food supplies secured

August 2026 – Following the distribution of mother-and-child relief packages we are now supporting a nursing home in the earthquake-hit coastal region near to Caracas. The project is being implemented together with LasComaesAndantes in Caracas. Visiones e. V. in Munich is helping with the organization between Germany and Venezuela. The project is being supported by Aktion Deutschland Hilft.

In the last few days, our partner team brought 882 Kilogrammes of food to the Madre Teresa Nursing Home in Las Salinas. The delivery is intended for 76 residents and 15 staff members and is expected to last for about a month.

„The journey to Las Salinas was difficult“, explains Ketsy, the leader of our partner organization LasComaesAndantes. „The route passed by numerous collapsed buildings. The great need for aid was also clearly evident in the surrounding communities.”

The nursing home is located ca. 54 km from Caracas and was at times difficult to reach following the serious earthquakes of 24th June 2026. Approximately 50 of the elderly residents don’t have families. Additionally, many carers were also personally affected by the catastrophe.

Following a call for help from the nursing home management, LasComaesAndantes assessed the need, organized the purchase of food and brought this personally to the home. The transfer was documented on site.

„When we arrived, the residents and carers could scarcely believe how much food we had brought“, explains Ketsy. „Their joy demonstrated to us how important this support is right now.“

The food delivery takes some of the pressure off the nursing home for several weeks. Additional support is needed to ensure that people in the affected areas continue to receive a reliable supply of food, water, hygiene products, and medication.

With a donation you are supporting us and our partners to implement this help directly on site.

Our expenditure and income are regularly reviewed by the German Central Institute for Social Issues (DZI). It has regularly certified the proper use of donations since 2009, which is why we are entitled to bear the corresponding seal.

Food supplies in the home are expected to last for a month. Thereafter the need remains.

Many residents don’t have families which can support them. The carers in the home are also affected by the effects of the earthquake.

With your donation you will help provide food and other necessities.

Our partners assess the need locally and bring help to those affected.

Venezuela has been in the midst of a protracted humanitarian and socioeconomic crisis for years. Despite some signs of economic stabilization, the supply situation remains dire for large segments of the population. According to estimates by international organizations, poverty remains widespread, while access to basic services such as electricity, clean water, and health care is limited and unevenly distributed in many areas.

The public health care system has been particularly hard hit. It has long been under considerable pressure—due, among other things, to shortages of medical supplies, the exodus of skilled personnel, and inadequate infrastructure. The supply of medications and medical supplies is not reliably guaranteed, and at the same time, high costs pose an additional barrier to access to medical treatment for many people.

In practice, this structural shortage means that medical services are often only available to a limited extent, and in many cases families must take it upon themselves to obtain necessary medications or supplies. Preventive care and the treatment of chronic conditions are only possible to a limited extent.

The severe earthquakes of the past few days have drastically exacerbated this already fragile situation. Hospitals are further overwhelmed by the high number of injured, while at the same time infrastructure has been damaged and supply routes are restricted. What was already a structural problem is thus developing into an acute supply crisis in the affected regions.

We are responding by providing targeted support to hospitals to stabilize medical care for the injured in the short term and to fill the most significant gaps in care.
