September 2026 – Nearly three months after the severe earthquakes in Venezuela, the need remains great. Damaged pipelines and failures in basic infrastructure are making access to clean water difficult in many places. As part of our earthquake relief efforts in Venezuela, we are currently supporting an emergency aid project in La Guaira and Miranda aimed at securing the water supply for people displaced by the earthquakes. The project, scheduled to last three months, is being carried out in collaboration with the organization Aktion gegen den Hunger and supported by the collective Aktion Deutschland Hilft.

According to the latest reports, more than 6,500 people were killed in the severe earthquakes on June 24, and approximately 17,000 were injured. Numerous buildings collapsed or were severely damaged. Many families were forced to leave their homes and cannot remain there safely for the time being.

In the affected areas, access to clean water is limited. At the same time, there is a shortage of suitable tanks and containers for the safe storage of water, as well as a lack of sufficient toilets, showers, and handwashing facilities. Under these conditions, the risk of infectious diseases increases.

“Clean water is needed every day—for drinking, personal hygiene, and food preparation. With this new project, we’re ensuring a steady supply where the need is greatest,” says Anja Kotzlowski, Programme Manager at Action Against Hunger.

The project is primarily aimed at people or households displaced by earthquakes who, due to damaged or unsafe living conditions, are temporarily unable to remain safely in their homes. Particular attention is given to households with older adults, infants and toddlers, children and adolescents, as well as people with disabilities.

Currently, the Bicentenario area in the Vargas administrative district of La Guaira state is designated as the site of operations. Water will be supplied through community distribution points. Depending on need, other earthquake-affected areas in La Guaira and Miranda where the water infrastructure has been damaged and access to water is currently insufficient may also be included.

In total, the project is expected to reach about 1,800 people. The water is delivered by tanker trucks and disinfected through chlorination. Its quality and available quantity are regularly monitored. In addition, residents receive information on the safe storage and use of the water, as well as on basic hygiene measures.

Aktion gegen den Hunger has been active since the first 48 hours after the earthquakes and has already reached over 10,000 people. The organization is contributing its logistics, specialized staff, and existing coordination structures to the joint project.

LandsAid is financing additional water deliveries, disinfection of water and associated hygiene measures.

Water deliveries ensure a steady supply as long as the pipeline networks and other water systems are not yet functioning reliably. The overarching goal of this measure remains to provide safe water to the population affected by the earthquake.

The project complements LandsAid’s existing relief efforts, including the distribution of mother-and-child aid packages and food packages to residents and staff at a nursing home that was severely affected by the earthquake. “Even three months after the earthquakes, the need for support remains great. That is why it is important to continue raising awareness about the situation of the affected families and to reliably continue providing aid,” says Michaela Wiese, executive director of LandsAid.

On June 24, 2026, at around 6:00 p.m. local time, two consecutive earthquakes measuring 7.2 and 7.5 on the Richter scale struck northern and central Venezuela. Among the areas affected were the capital district and the states of La Guaira, Miranda, Carabobo, Yaracuy, Aragua, and Falcón.

According to the latest figures, more than 6,000 people lost their lives, and about 17,000 were injured. Many families were forced to leave their damaged or destroyed homes and have been living in temporary shelters ever since. There have been repeated interruptions in the water supply at these shelters.

As part of its emergency relief efforts to date, Action Against Hunger has provided more than 470,000 litres of safe drinking water, installed 40 mobile latrines, nine temporary showers, and 13 water tanks, and disposed of more than 300 cubic meters of solid waste.
