Ukraine Faces Its Harshest Winter of the War

Attacks on the energy supply are exacerbating the situation ahead of the fifth winter of the war. LandsAid Calls for Help

Protection and Support for the Cold Season

October 2026 — The fifth winter of the war is approaching and could be the harshest yet. Intensified Russian attacks on energy supplies and other critical infrastructure are further exacerbating an already precarious situation. If electricity, heat, and water are cut off, it will be nearly impossible to heat homes, prepare meals, and manage daily life. Preparations for winter aid are therefore already in full swing.

We are supporting our local partner, Save Ukraine, in helping particularly vulnerable people get through the winter. At two centres in the Kiev metropolitan area, Save Ukraine normally provides temporary shelter for older adults and people with limited mobility who have been evacuated from high-risk areas.

In the winter, the facilities are to be open around the clock to other people as well, particularly children and families who have been rescued from frontline areas and occupied territories. This includes orphans, children with severe disabilities, and children who have experienced sexual violence. The centres provide safe places to sleep as well as medical and psychosocial support.

To ensure that children and families can be provided for during power outages and extreme temperatures, and that the centres remain open, Save Ukraine needs, among other things, non-perishable food, warm blankets, sleeping bags, winter clothing, and hygiene supplies, as well as portable power storage units, power stations, gas heaters, camping stoves, and generator fuel.

Even a small donation can make a big difference: According to Save Ukraine, a food package for a family costs about 40 euros, a sleeping bag about 50 euros, and a warm blanket about 15 euros.

Through these two centres, Save Ukraine aims to support more than 30,000 people over a five-month period. Together, they can reach up to 2,000 people each day. In addition, the organization plans to ensure that a day centre for children with disabilities has a reliable heat supply so that care, rehabilitation, and therapy can continue even in Winter.

The urgency of the preparations was underscored by the field trip our project manager, Raquel Nerger, took at the end of August. In Kamianka-Buzka near Lviv, people from Khmelnytskyi, and Lviv expressed their concerns about power outages, the cold, and supply shortages.

Older people in particular, who are barely able to leave their homes, need not only medical care but also regular visits and personal contact. Medical care is important, but the fact that someone comes to talk to them and listen to them is no less significant.

Our partner, Caritas Khmelnytskyi, therefore plans to provide 90 particularly vulnerable people with a hot meal delivered directly to their homes once a week. This ensures that the aid also reaches older adults and people with limited mobility who cannot get to a distribution centre on their own.

We must act now so that our partners can organize the necessary support in a timely manner.

Donations allow us to provide children and families with winter gear and food, keep safe shelters open, and ensure care for children with disabilities. At the same time, we help older adults by providing them with hot meals and personal care.

We are urgently appealing for donations to support Ukraine this winter. Support is urgently needed now so that food, winter gear, and technical equipment can be procured in a timely manner.

Winter poses major challenges for people in Ukraine.

With your donation, you’ll help our local partners organize timely assistance: for children and families in need of shelter and warmth, for children with disabilities who depend on reliable care, and for older adults who are barely able to leave their homes.

40 euros helps fund a food package for a family. A sleeping bag costs about 50 euros. With your donation, you also help provide hot meals for older adults and ensure that the shelters remain warm and continue to operate.

Every donation helps us prepare winter relief efforts in a timely manner. Support our Ukraine relief efforts now!

The war in Ukraine has been ongoing since Russia’s large-scale invasion in February 2022. For more than four years, people have been living under the threat of attacks, destruction, and supply shortages. With Winter approaching, the situation is becoming even more dire: attacks on energy infrastructure are jeopardizing the supply of electricity, heat, and water. At the same time, rising demand and limited resources are making it difficult to secure food and other essential goods.

Older adults and people with limited mobility are particularly vulnerable to rocket attacks, shelling, and power outages. Many are barely able to leave their homes and are becoming increasingly socially isolated. The ongoing stress can exacerbate chronic illnesses. When family members have fled abroad or been drafted into military service, there is often a lack of support, medical care, and personal contact. Cold weather and the inability to prepare hot meals further exacerbate their situation.

Children, too, are suffering from the ongoing war. Air raid sirens interrupt school classes, and attacks on the energy grid disrupt families’ daily lives. In Winter, warm clothing, sufficient food, and heated rooms become especially important. Children who have been rescued from frontline or occupied areas, orphans, and children with disabilities need special protection and reliable care. When families struggle to obtain enough food and, at the same time, face power and heating outages, it becomes even more difficult to meet children’s basic needs. Safe shelter, warm meals, and psychosocial support are therefore especially important during the Winter months.
