A Discussion on Humanitarian Aid

LandsAid board member Michaela Wiese visits the Landsberg Lions Club

How Humanitarian Aid Makes a Difference on the Ground

September 2026 — How does LandsAid operate in crisis-stricken regions? Why are local partners so important? And what concrete impact does the support from the Landsberg am Lech Lions Club have in Ukraine? Our executive director, Michaela Wiese, addressed these and other questions on September 15 at the Landsberg am Lech Lions Club’s member meeting.

About 20 to 25 members and their guests gathered for an evening together at Waitzingers in Landsberg. After dinner, Michaela provided an overview of LandsAid’s work, presented current projects, and explained why collaboration with local partners plays a central role: They have contextual knowledge, understand the needs of the local people, and can operate even in hard-to-reach regions.

The current context of humanitarian work was also a topic of the presentation. As a small organization, LandsAid can respond quickly and flexibly and draw on many years of experience. At the same time, geopolitical shifts, a shrinking humanitarian operating space, and fluctuating funding are currently making our work more difficult.

The Landsberg Lions Club has supported two LandsAid projects in Ukraine with a total of 5,000 Euros. 4,000 Euros went toward medical care for children with cancer and those injured in the war in Lviv and Chernihiv. Together with its local partner, Evum, this funding was used to purchase medications and medical supplies for three children, as well as medical equipment and consumables for St. Nicholas Hospital in Lviv. Evum also organized discharge celebrations for two of the children following their hospital stays.

An additional 1,000 Euros, provided in collaboration with our partner Save Ukraine, helped supply regions hardest hit by the crisis with urgently needed relief supplies and fuel, so that people are better protected from the cold.

Michaela also reported on new information from our project partner, Caritas Khmelnytskyi: The energy infrastructure remains severely damaged. Targeted attacks are causing outages in electricity, heat, and water and are also jeopardizing the food supply. That is why Caritas is already making preparations for Winter. Generators, firewood, and water systems must be made ready for the Winter. In addition, weekly hot meals are needed for 90 particularly vulnerable people. One meal costs 11.50 Euros per person. Incontinence supplies are also urgently needed.

The presentation was followed by ample time for questions and personal discussion. The participants’ keen interest demonstrated just how important it is to gain direct insight into the work and the specific needs in the project regions.

Many thanks to the Lions Club Landsberg am Lech —for their dedication and the trust they have placed in us, as well as for the opportunity to introduce ourselves and our projects to their members.
