Learning Materials That Last

160 learning kits for about 800 children in northern Syria—with 50 euros, you can provide a kit for five children

Education for Children in Northern Syria

October 2026 — In northern Syria, many schools have been damaged by years of armed conflict and the severe earthquakes of 2023. For many children today, going to school means learning under difficult conditions: in overcrowded classrooms, makeshift learning spaces, and with few teaching materials available.

For children who have experienced war, displacement, or natural disasters, a seat in the classroom is not enough. They need materials that help them understand the curriculum and explore it on their own. At the same time, playing together can help them reconnect with other children and build confidence in their own abilities.

This is where a project by the İmece Initiative —which we support—comes in. In a social production workshop in Turkey, 160 Montessori-inspired wooden learning sets are being produced. The sturdy sets include various learning boards on topics such as the alphabet, basic arithmetic, world geography, and the solar system. By touching, sorting, and experimenting, abstract concepts become tangible.

One set can be used by five children at the same time. In total, the sets can reach approximately 800 students. The learning sets are distributed to schools and learning centres in Aleppo and other regions of northern Syria, where children are studying amid the aftermath of war and earthquakes.

The project combines two aspects: The educational materials benefit children in northern Syria. At the same time, their production creates employment opportunities for disadvantaged women and young people in Turkey. This allows them to earn an income and develop professional skills.

This creates a connection between two regions: Learning materials are produced in Turkey that open up new learning opportunities for children in northern Syria. Each of the 160 sets thus represents concrete support—both for children in the classroom and for the people who produce the materials.

Help children rediscover the joy of learning

Children in northern Syria have experienced war and earthquakes. Now they need the opportunity to learn, grow, and regain confidence in their own abilities.

A learning kit costs 50 euros. With your donation, you can help ensure that a kit like this reaches children who have to learn under difficult conditions. The materials make learning tangible and enable children to play and explore together.

On February 6th 2023, severe earthquakes struck southeastern Turkey and northwestern Syria. More than 50,000 people died; in northwestern Syria alone, more than 8,500 people lost their lives. The earthquakes struck a region that had already been severely affected by more than a decade of war, displacement, and economic hardship.

The humanitarian situation in Syria remains tense. According to the United Nations, 15.6 million people currently need humanitarian aid. About 5.5 million people remain internally displaced within Syria. Although many people have returned to their places of origin since the end of 2024, safe housing, functioning infrastructure, and basic services are still lacking in many areas.

The situation is particularly difficult for people in regions where access to basic services remains limited. In many places, health and educational institutions are only partially operational. For families, this means that children sometimes have access to education only under difficult conditions.

Children, women, older adults, people with disabilities, and families living in remote or conflict-affected areas are particularly at risk.

Our partner organization, Imece

Our local partner organization, the Imece Initiative, was founded in Izmir in 2014 in response to the Syrian refugee crisis and was registered as a nonprofit organization in March 2016. Since then, the organization has been supporting refugees and disadvantaged people in the region through educational programmes, humanitarian aid, and initiatives to promote self-reliance, among other efforts.

Imece works directly with the affected communities and local organizations. The organization is active both in the Izmir region and in Syrian areas immediately across the Turkish border. LandsAid has been working with Imece for several years and, together with the organization, supports projects for people affected by flight, displacement, and the consequences of war.
