Two Major Earthquakes Strike Venezuela

LandsAid is currently exploring options for providing rapid assistance to the affected population.

Severe damage and numerous casualties

June 2026 — Two powerful earthquakes struck large parts of Venezuela early Thursday morning. According to international seismological observatories, the quakes measured 7.2 and 7.5 on the magnitude scale and occurred within less than a minute of each other. The northwest of the country and the capital, Caracas, have been particularly hard hit.

Numerous buildings were damaged or destroyed, and in many places there were power outages and significant disruptions to infrastructure. According to official figures so far, at least 164 people have died and more than 900 have been injured. Since one of the quakes occurred at a shallow depth and the region continues to be shaken by aftershocks, experts fear the death toll could rise significantly. The Venezuelan government has declared a state of emergency.

The situation remains tense for the affected population. Rescue and recovery efforts are underway under difficult conditions, while many people must continue to remain outdoors for safety reasons.

We immediately began our initial assessment of the situation and are currently building a network of local partners to implement relief efforts in a timely manner and in accordance with needs.

As soon as we have reliable information about the situation and possible support measures, we will provide an update on the next steps.

Our thoughts are with all those affected by this devastating disaster. We hope that rescue workers will be able to reach as many people as possible and that the necessary aid will reach those affected quickly.

Our efforts are supported by Aktion Deutschland Hilft.

Every donation is crucial right now to make rapid relief possible. Together, we can support people who have lost everything in this disaster.

On June 24, 2026, Venezuela was rocked by two exceptionally strong earthquakes within less than a minute. According to the United States Geological Survey , the quakes reached magnitudes of 7.2 and 7.5, making them among the strongest worldwide in 2026.

The epicenters were located in the northwest of the country near the Caribbean coast, about 170 kilometers west of the capital Caracas. The second quake, in particular, was extremely destructive due to its shallow focal depth of about ten kilometers.

The tremors caused severe damage to buildings, transportation routes, and critical infrastructure. In Caracas, some buildings collapsed; according to media reports, damage was also reported at the international airport, along with outages in the power and communications networks. The Venezuelan government declared a national state of emergency and warned of further aftershocks.

According to official reports so far, at least 32 people have died and more than 700 have been injured. Since many people are still missing and rescue workers continue to search for survivors in collapsed buildings, the death toll could rise further. Based on the earthquake’s magnitude and the population density in the affected areas, the USGS estimates a significant risk of damage and casualties.

Venezuela lies on an active tectonic boundary between the Caribbean Plate and the South American Plate. The movement of these plates causes earthquakes to occur regularly. However, events of this magnitude are rare and are considered the most severe in Venezuela in more than a century.
