For years, Yemen has been experiencing one of the world’s most severe humanitarian crises. The conflict, which has been ongoing for eleven years, has destroyed infrastructure, crippled the economy, and left millions of people in dire straits. More than three million people have been displaced within the country and often live in camps or informal settlements under extremely difficult conditions.

Inflation and disrupted supply chains have more than doubled the prices of staple foods. Many families can barely afford enough to eat. Internally displaced persons and host communities are particularly affected and often rely entirely on aid.

People must take drastic measures to survive: they cut back on meals, sell off essential possessions, or scavenge for food in bins. At the same time, a lack of access to clean water, rising fuel prices, and recurring outbreaks of diseases such as cholera and malaria make daily life even more difficult. The largely collapsed health care system exacerbates these risks, especially for children and other particularly vulnerable groups.

We have been working with Human Needs Development in Yemen since 2017, two years after the start of the civil war. Our focus is on humanitarian aid aimed at improving food security. However, we also implement long-term, sustainable projects, such as those in the areas of education and livelihood support.
